Click, Clack, Ahh!

Sometime in the wee hours of the night, I drifted out of a dream in which I was grocery shopping while being followed by my parents and a small chorus of other people performing Handel’s Messiah. They were really doing a fantastic job and I appreciated that they understood how much it meant to me being able to attend their performance and shop for my cow for the week aka milk at the same time. But then I was called out the performance, and out of sleep entirely, because I could hear someone tapping the computer keys outside our bedroom door. I listened for several minutes until I was quite sure that my ears were not deceiving me and I was not dreaming. Yep, there it was……someone slowly typing away. A clicking, a clacking of the keys being pecked in no particular spellings inched into our room. Kind of sinister, don’t you think? An axe murderer who wakes his unsuspecting victims by striking eerie and ominous letters on the keyboard. {{Shudder}} Finally, I called for backup. I nudged Mark and said, “Is someone on the computer?” He paused for a listen. “No,” he said confidently. I think he was happy to hear something insane come out of my mouth in the middle of the night, instead of his (he has been known to fight dinosaurs in his sleep.) “I’m not dreaming,” I said. “Oh, okay,” he said and rolled back over. He learned that trick from me. “Can’t you hear it? It’s like someone’s hunting and pecking.” “Nobody is in the house,” he said, “typing on the computer.” “Well is it Brendan or Jillian? Or maybe a mouse is on the desk? That's it, it is a mouse!” We sat in the quiet dark and listened. No typing. After a few more seconds, I rested my head back on my pillow and tried to go back to sleep. Mark readjusted his pillow and refolded the covers (he is very particular about this, even in his sleep.) Several minutes later, as I was trying to get back to my grocery shopping and personal mobile performance of Handel’s Messiah, I heard Mark muttering. “It does sound like the keyboard,” he said. “You hear it?” I paused. I couldn’t hear it. “I don’t hear it anymore,” I said. “I can hear it,” he said. “Do you think it’s a mouse?” I asked. “Or a murderer?” “Neither.” “OK. What is it?”
"I don't know. I am sure it is nothing. Maybe something outside." he said, not quite convinced. But much to my extreme pleasure, we woke up this morning un-murdered. The kids still in bed and there are no mouse droppings anywhere in the house. I guess it was outside —Mr. Windy in the office with the candlestick. Whew! That was a close one.

Yikes Ike or My Husband the Roofer

It is supposed to rain tonight. Mark thought it was about time we (okay he) fixed the roof. We lost 8 shingles when Ike blew through almost two weeks ago. So my handy honey, you know the one that doesn't like heights, scaled to the third highest peak (it sounds more dramatic when I write it that way) of our roof and with a little shingle cement, a few roofing nails, and one mighty swing of a hammer - our roof is fixed. F-I-X-E-D. Fixed! I am so grateful I am married to such a wonderful man that isn't afraid of hard work and finds great pride in the care and upkeep of our home. And by the way, great job holding the ladder Grandpa. He couldn't have done it without you.

Daddy Confusion

Is Mark a Chris Bradley look-a-like?
Apparently Karigan thinks so. You see, Chris Bradley is the lead meteorologist on Channel 10 news and while watching the weather tonight, Karigan crawled to the TV, pointed to Chris, excitedly declared "da dad dad," then started clapping. I am hoping it is because we normally watch the 6 o'clock news (watching the 5 o'clock today) and Mark typically arrives home around weather time. Sure that makes sense, right?

Rain, Rain Go Away!

A neighboring village has a large Fourth of July celebration every year that begins with a kiddie parade at 10 AM and then ends with fireworks at 10 PM with a little bit of everything for everyone in between. The main parade started at 1:30 PM, and the rain started at noon. We stayed anyway, and with umbrellas turned upside down, collected as much candy as we could.

World Series Champions, Maybe Next Year

Well, Brendans team's run for the Little League Championship has come to an end, and I was at a motherhood crossroad. You know, the pivotal intersection of decision. On one hand I can act like a sore loser and rant about the politics of little league baseball, on the other I can choose to advocate for my son, his team and stand up for what is just and fair. Or, as I have chosen, neither because sometimes things happen, and no matter how loudly you scream, it will be as it is - as it was.
Rewind -- Since the Midwest has been pummeled with torrential downpours on a daily basis this last week, all the teams knew that our schedules had to be flexible, that rain would fall, fields would be wet, and that games would be postponed. Our first playoff game was scheduled for Saturday. We are up 6-0, bottom of the 3rd. The winds pick up, a few drops begin to fall, then each drop within every cloud above simultaneously falls to the ground. In the confusion, the opposing team scores 4 runs. The field is too wet to continue any time today, so we are postponed until Sunday. The boys assume they will continue where they left off and are disappointed Sunday to learn that the game has to begin again. Melancholy and sadness consume all efforts to play and 7 runs are scored by the opposing team the first inning. A big pep talk by the coach and finally some finesse is seen by the 3rd inning. And the drops. start. to. fall. First 1, then 2, then a repeat of the previous game's rain out. Only this time the game is called, not postponed, not rescheduled. Called! I will spare this post from the diatribe that is running through my thoughts and will not place judgement on the events being linked to the commissioner being the coach of the other team or the ump his nephew. I will only continue to exclaim to Brendan that "you win some, you lose some, but the important thing is you keep playing like you will win them all."
So we went home, threw our clothes in on the spin cycle, and went for pizza. Later, we topped the night off with our own backyard baseball game, in which Jillian sent a ball into the neighbors yard, Brendan lost two balls to the sewer, Mark let the kids win, and I made a stealthy slide into second. Mark thought I fell, and came swooping in to save me. Teach him to doubt my athleticism, though the "damsel in distress" wasn't so far fetched either.

Holy Tornado, Batman

Well, not exactly, but the sirens did go off for several hours last night. More storms are expected through the weekend.
